Mercury Removal
from Gas

Mercury is a key contaminant and toxin that must be removed during natural gas production. Its high vapor pressure causes liquid metal embrittlement, dangerously weakening alloys used in gas production equipment, while posing direct risks to the environment and human health.

Applications

Where Mercury Removal Is Critical

Mercury contamination threatens equipment integrity, product value, and regulatory compliance across the full natural gas production and processing chain.

  • Natural Gas
    Production Wells

At the wellhead, mercury in produced gas causes liquid metal embrittlement in aluminum alloy heat exchangers, pipelines, and fittings. MERSEP removes liquid mercury at the source, protecting infrastructure and personnel from the first stage of production.

  • LNG and Gas
    Processing Facilities

Mercury in feed gas can poison catalysts and corrode cryogenic equipment in LNG trains. MERSEP provides upstream protection, enhancing the efficiency of downstream absorption technologies and extending catalyst and equipment service life.

  • Gas Export and
    Pipeline Protection

Export gas quality specifications require mercury below strict thresholds. MERSEP ensures compliance with sales gas specifications while its compact footprint makes it well-suited for installation in space-constrained platform and pipeline environments.

How It Works

Coalescence,
Not Absorption

MERSEP takes a fundamentally different approach from conventional mercury removal, using MYCELX coated media to coalesce and collect liquid mercury rather than trapping it chemically.

  1. Contaminated Gas Enters MERSEP

Natural gas containing liquid mercury droplets and vapor-phase mercury enters the MERSEP vessel. The unique MYCELX polymer media pack is positioned in the gas flow path.

  2. Mercury Coalesces on Media Surface

Unlike absorption, the MYCELX coated media physically coalesces dispersed liquid mercury droplets. Small droplets contact the media, grow into larger droplets, and overcome the interfacial tension issues that defeat conventional absorbers.

  3. Mercury Drains and Is Collected

Coalesced mercury drains by gravity into a sealed collection vessel at the bottom of the unit. It does not re-entrain back into the gas stream, unlike mercury sitting on a conventional absorbent surface.

  4. Clean Gas Exits, Waste Volume Minimized

Treated gas exits the MERSEP at specification, ready for downstream processing or export. The collected mercury product is a substantially reduced, contained waste volume compared to the large spent-media waste of traditional systems.

Performance Benefits

Reasons to Choose MERSEP

MYCELX MERSEP is a completely unique, patented system that is superior to existing absorption-based mercury removal technologies in a number of critical ways, from operational effectiveness and infrastructure protection to HSE profile and waste management.

  1. Effectively Removes
    Liquid Mercury

MERSEP coalesces liquid mercury droplets by gravity, overcoming the interfacial tension issues that make conventional absorption unreliable.

  2. Increases Value of
    End Product

Meeting mercury specifications ensures gas products hit sales quality requirements, avoiding off-spec penalties and unlocking full commercial value.

  3. Safeguards Infrastructure

Prevents liquid metal embrittlement in aluminum alloy heat exchangers, pipelines, and compressors, avoiding equipment failure and unplanned shutdowns.

  4. Enhances Downstream
    Absorption Efficiency

Removing the bulk mercury load upstream reduces strain on downstream polishing absorbers, extending their service life and cutting media replacement costs.

  5. Substantially Reduces
    Waste Volume

Coalesced mercury is collected as a compact liquid stream, generating far less hazardous waste than the large volumes of spent media produced by traditional absorption systems.

  6. Small Footprint

MERSEP's compact design fits offshore platforms, FPSOs, and constrained onshore sites where traditional large-bed absorption vessels cannot be installed.
