Applications

Where REGEN is Deployed

The MYCELX REGEN Unit is built to handle a wide range of operating environments — from onshore produced water treatment to offshore platforms and high-solids industrial streams.

  • Onshore — New

Deployed across produced water and frac recycle operations onshore, handling inlet oil concentrations up to 1,000 ppm with no chemical additives.

  • Onshore — Retrofit

Retrofit existing Nutshell Filters (NSF) via vessel conversion with minimal modifications, hydraulic validation for media regeneration, and review of facility water balance and backwash handling requirements.

  • Offshore

Compact footprint, 10–25% smaller than comparable systems, makes REGEN well-suited for space-constrained offshore platforms and marine installations.

  • High Solids Removal

Removes oil, solids, and oily-coated solids in a single step down to 4 microns, handling high-solids streams and fluctuating inlet loading without upset.

How It Works

A System Engineered to
Capture Oil & Remove Solids

REGEN removes free, dispersed, and emulsified oil using media with hydrophobic and oleophilic properties—repelling water while attracting and capturing oil. Compared to standard backwashable media filtration, it delivers 2x more hydrocarbon removal, 4x more TSS removal, and up to 60% less backwash waste. It meets discharge criteria without chemicals, runs as a low-emission closed-loop system, and enables effective hydrocarbon capture.

  • Secondary
    Filtration Stage

REGEN is deployed as a secondary treatment stage filtration but can also serve as the final filtration stage, absorbing oil without absorbing water.

  • Backwash &
    Oil Recovery

A 15–20 minute backwash cycle reverses flow upward, loosening packed media and releasing both solids and oil droplets. Free and dispersed oil is fully recovered to the customer without chemical denaturing.

  • Long-life
    Regeneration

With a media life of up to 24 months and operator-controlled or fully automated backwash, REGEN delivers low operating costs across onshore, offshore, and high-solids applications.

Performance Benefits

Highest Performing Bed Media

MYCELX REGEN media filtration can be used as a replacement for other bed media such as nutshell, improving performance in both droplet and particle removal. A proprietary retrofit package is available for existing nutshell vessels.

  1. Single-Step Oil Removal

Removes oil, solids, and oily coated solids simultaneously. Free, dispersed, and fractions of emulsified oils are all handled in one pass.

  2. 95% Efficiency at 5 µm

Removes oil droplets at 95% efficiency at 5 microns and suspended solids at 95% efficiency at 4 microns, achieving filtration down to 2 microns total.

  3. No Chemicals Required

REGEN requires zero water treatment chemicals. Oil recovered during backwash is returned to the customer without chemical denaturing.

  4. Compact, Smaller Footprint

10–25% smaller footprint than comparable systems makes REGEN viable for space-constrained onshore and offshore installations.

  5. Long Media Life Cycle

Media is designed to last up to 24 months depending on application. Operator-controlled or automated backwash cycles of 15–20 minutes keep operating costs low.

  6. Nutshell Vessel Retrofit

A proprietary retrofit package allows existing nutshell vessels to be upgraded to REGEN media, improving performance without full equipment replacement.
