Understanding Final MCL’s for PFAS and How to Navigate
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for drinking water quality. These MCLs are legally enforceable standards that limit the levels of contaminants in public water systems under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).
Let’s take a closer look at some of these MCLs for PFAS.
On May 14, 2025, EPA announced the agency will keep the current National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWR) for PFOA and PFOS. As part of this action, EPA also announced its intent to extend the PFOA and PFOS Maximum Contaminant Level compliance deadlines and establish a federal exemption framework.
| PFAS Compound | MCLG | MCL* |
|---|---|---|
| PFOA | 0 | 4 ppt |
| PFOS | 0 | 4 ppt |
