  • Upstream Oil and Gas

    Thermal Enhanced Oil Recovery

Thick and viscous oils with API gravity less than 15 are difficult to mobilize from the producing formation. Oil and gas production facilities located on heavy oil reserves will utilize steam flooding, steam assisted gravity drainage or cyclic steam cycling to increase the recovery rate of these heavy oils. This involves steam injection to reduce the oil’s viscosity, thereby increasing the recovery rate of heavy oil. MYCELX provides filtration processes to treat the massive amounts of produced water from these thermal enhanced recovery techniques.

Common Problems

Facilities often recycle much of their produced water for steam production. This water must be filtered for both oil, hardness and tds content which can cause fouling of the heat transfer surfaces and steam generation equipment.

  • Oil fouling of resins can result in increased scaling rates on steam generation equipment
  • Oil fouling of heat transfer surfaces can result in a rise in the energy demand to meet steam volumes
  • Process excursions or upsets can be caused by the operational sensitivity of resins, heat exchangers, and steam generation equipment
  • Water treatment systems not meeting the desired water quality for steam production can increase costs and energy demands

Solutions

MYCELX REGEN is an advanced backwashable media filter infused with our patented polymer that has been developed to address the challenges and limitations of conventional walnut shell media.

Benefits

  • Maintains desired water quality metrics for optimal production
  • Reliably treats most excursion management water quality issues
  • Efficiently removes oil droplets and suspended solids
  • Requires no water treatment chemicals
  • Treats produced water streams up to 95 C
  • Minimizes production costs
