Effective Water Treatment for Optimizing Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Production

The following was presented at the 2015 Produced Water Society in January 2015.

According to the International Energy Agency, EOR could unlock approximately 300 billion barrels of oil which represents almost $15 trillion dollars. As technology advances, new production methods are being employed at a higher rate to produce oil that was previously deemed “Non-Recoverable”.

Some of the more common EOR processes utilize thermal, such as steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS), and chemical addition, such as polymer flood, surfactant polymer flood (SP Flood), and alkaline surfactant polymer flood (ASP Flood). The complex emulsions generated by EOR production methods coupled with environmental regulations, water supply issues, and recycle and re-use initiatives drive the need for robust water treatment. MYCELX has developed a solution for optimizing EOR produced water treatment.
