  • Industry: Oil and Gas – Downstream Solution

Overview

MYCELX Technologies successfully commissioned a waste water recycling process for Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) in Jubail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This SABIC installation is the first viable system of its kind for MTBE treatment and produces environmental benefits and cost savings. The units clean carcinogenic waste water so it may be safely re-used and simultaneously capture an escaping fuel source.

MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) is manufactured as an additive for motor gasoline. The MYCELXrecycling process handles the petrochemical facility’s waste water with hydrocarbon contamination in the range of up to 50,000 parts per million (ppm).

After treatment, the effluent water is more than 95% free from toxins: less than 5 ppm oil content and less than 1 ppm volatile organic compounds. The recycled water is pure enough to be re-used, effectively reducing the facility’s cost and using less of the region’s most valuable commodity – water. Filtered water replaces the working environment’s carcinogenic water, which would otherwise be toxic to operators.

The MYCELX waste water treatment unit also captures a valuable hydrocarbon by-product for the facility. The by-product can now be used as a complementary fuel for the facility’s boiler, creating substantial gains in energy efficiency and further reducing costs.
